Literacy Tutoring Specialist

Position Title: Literacy Tutoring Specialist 

 

Location: Services will primarily be provided in an elementary school during school hours. This is a one-year commitment paid service position and services could be offered in a community-based organization such as YMCA, local early learning centers, or at local neighborhood hubs such as community resource rooms in housing developments. 

 

Impact: Services will be provided to improve educational outcomes of early learning/elementary students that are currently not meeting satisfactory performance levels. Emphasis will be placed on literacy related outcomes, specifically working to ensure students are reading at grade level. These services will improve the educational outcomes of students enrolled in the program, their satisfaction and engagement with school, and their confidence to continue progressing through their educational journey.  

 

Immediate Supervisor: Brittney Foley, AmeriCorps Program Director at United Way of HCM. Site supervisors will be assigned at each service location, e.g., Elementary School Principal. 

 

Position Summary: This position will be responsible for delivering literacy tutoring services intended to improve academic outcomes with early learning/elementary students in the community. Service members will be responsible for working with students identified by teachers and school administration that are at risk of falling behind academic standards in their respective grades.   

 

Essential Functions and Requirements of Position:  

  • Service members engage in direct-service Early Learning/K-2 literacy tutoring (one-on-one or in small groups)   
  • Connect students and their families with resources needed to improve their stability  
  • Ensure students do not need resources such as nutritional assistance, clothing, etc. which may make it harder to prioritize learning. In coordination with site supervisors, utilize United Way of HCM channels to connect families with available resources. 
  • Support recruitment of community volunteers for tutor programs before and after school.   
  • Promote and encourage peer and cross-age tutoring opportunities.  
  • Serve with English Language Learners and coordinate activities to increase English proficiency. 
  • Support family and community events and projects. 
  • Work with other service members to build community-based literacy resources that can be shared within and between schools. 
  • Complete national service program requirements, including: reporting, trainings, professional learning cluster meetings, and community service projects around National Days of Service. 
  • Adhere to school policies and procedures
  • Clear a National Criminal History Check
  • Be at least 18 years of age and possess US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status

 

Benefits:

  • Earn a Living Allowance based on your year-long service commitment ranging from $12,600 to $16,800 per year for 900 to 1200 hours/year of service (average 20 to 30 hours/week) 
  • General working hours are during school operational hours. Some opportunities may exist in after school hours or weekends and will extend into the summer months.
